Word Guess Tips: Letter Strategy, Clues and Hinglish Words
Word Guess is a friendly take on the classic letter-guessing game: you see a clue and a row of blank tiles, and you guess letters before all your balloons pop. It feels like luck at first, but strong players solve long chains of words by choosing letters in a smart order and reading the clue carefully. This guide explains how the game scores you and the strategies that keep your balloons in the air.
How Word Guess Works
- Pick a category, then guess the hidden word one letter at a time.
- Every word comes with a clue, such as "Mumbai's potato fritter in a bun".
- You get 7 balloons per word. Each wrong letter pops one. Lose all seven and the run ends.
- Answers can be more than one word, such as PAV BHAJI or DURGA PUJA. The gap between words is shown, so you can count the letters in each part.
- Words tend to get longer the more you solve, starting around four or five letters and growing toward twelve.
How Scoring Works
Each solved word scores 100 points plus 10 for every balloon still flying, so a clean solve with all seven balloons is worth 170. On top of that, every word you solve without a hint builds your chain, and the chain multiplies your points by 1.1, then 1.21, and so on, up to ร4. Using a hint resets the chain.
So the real goal is not just to solve each word, but to solve it with few mistakes and no hints, word after word.
Which Letters to Guess First
The best opening letters depend on the category. We counted the letters in the game's own word lists, and the two groups behave very differently:
| Category group | Most common letters, in order |
|---|---|
| English categories (Animals, Fruits & Vegetables, Countries, Sports, Jobs, Things at Home) | A, E, R, O, I, N, T, L, S |
| Indian categories (Indian Food, Indian Cities, Festivals & Culture, Hindi Words) | A, I, H, R, N, D, U, T, S |
A good default plan:
- Start with A. It is the most common letter in every category, and in the Indian categories it appears more than twice as often as any other letter.
- Add the next vowels. In English categories, E and O are strong. In Indian categories, I and U come first and E is surprisingly rare.
- Then common consonants. R, N, T and S are good in both groups. L is strong in English words; H and D are strong in Indian ones.
- Save rare letters such as Q, X, Z, J and V for when the pattern points to them.
Hinglish and Hindi Word Tricks
The Hindi Words category uses common Roman (Hinglish) spellings, such as DOSTI, ZINDAGI, BARISH and DHANYAVAAD. These follow their own patterns:
- H after a consonant: many Hindi sounds are written as two letters: KH, BH, DH, CH, SH, PH and GH. If you see a gap after K, B, D, C, S or P, H is a great guess. Think KHUSHI, BHAI, DHARTI, SHANTI.
- Double vowels: long sounds are often spelt AA, EE or OO, as in PAANI, DHEERE and KHUSHBOO. Once you find one A, look for a second right beside it.
- Common endings: words often end in I or A (DOSTI, KHUSHI, DUNIYA, SAPNA), so a blank at the end is a good spot for those letters.
- Read the clue: every Hindi word's clue gives its meaning, such as "Means friendship". Translate it in your head first; you may know the word straight away.
Use the Clue and Category Together
The clue is the strongest hint you have, and it is free. Before guessing any letter, read it and try to name the answer outright.
- Indian Cities clues use nicknames: "Pink City" is Jaipur, "City of Lakes" is Udaipur, "City of Joy" is Kolkata.
- Indian Food clues describe the dish, so think about what you would order at a dhaba or a chaat stall.
- Festivals & Culture clues describe a custom, such as burning effigies or tying a thread.
- Mixed draws from every category, so the clue is your only guide to which letter set to use.
Once you have a guess in mind, check it against the number of tiles. If it fits, guess its less common letters first. If they are right, you have confirmed the word with almost no risk.
When to Use a Hint
The Hint button reveals one missing letter, but it costs a balloon and resets your multiplier chain. It also needs at least two balloons left to use.
- Avoid hints while your chain is high. Losing a ร2 or ร3 multiplier costs far more points than a wrong guess or two.
- Use a hint when you are truly stuck and down to two or three balloons. Ending the run costs more than losing the chain.
- Do not hint early in a word. A few smart vowel guesses usually reveal more than one random letter does.
Common Mistakes
- Guessing E first in Indian categories, where it is one of the rarer vowels.
- Ignoring the gap between words in two-word answers.
- Guessing rare letters early because they appear in one word you have in mind.
- Hinting by reflex and losing a big chain multiplier.
FAQ
What is the best first letter in Word Guess?
A. It is the most common letter in every category in the game, especially in Indian food, cities, festivals and Hindi words.
How many wrong guesses do I get?
Seven per word, one for each balloon. A fresh set of balloons appears with every new word.
Does using a hint lower my score?
Yes, in two ways. It pops a balloon, which is worth 10 points, and it resets your chain multiplier, which can be worth much more.
What does the Hindi Words category include?
Everyday Hindi words written in Roman letters, such as DOSTI, PARIVAR and SAPNA, each with a clue giving its English meaning.
