Snake Game Tips: How to Get a High Score in Snake
Snake is one of the simplest games ever made: steer, eat, grow, and don't crash. That simplicity is exactly why it is so hard to put down. Every apple makes the next one harder to reach, because your own tail slowly fills the board. Most runs don't end because the player is slow; they end because the player steered into a space with no way out.
This guide covers how Neon Snake on GameChakra works, then the habits that turn a 200-point run into a 1,000-point run. Everything below matches how our game actually scores, so you can use it straight away.
How Neon Snake Works
- The board is a 20ร20 grid with solid walls. There is no wrap-around: touching a wall ends the run.
- Your snake starts 4 segments long, moving right.
- Each apple is worth 10 points and adds one segment.
- A golden apple is worth 50 points and adds three segments. It appears only sometimes, and only after you have eaten a couple of apples. It has a ring timer around it and vanishes after about 5 seconds.
- The slow-mo power-up (a blue hexagon with clock hands) can appear once you have eaten 4 apples. Eating it slows the snake down for 5 seconds. If you ignore it, it disappears after about 7 seconds.
- Running into a wall or into your own body ends the run.
Speed
The snake speeds up a little with every apple you eat. The speed-up is gradual at first and reaches its maximum after roughly 30 apples. After that it stays at top speed, so the challenge from then on is space, not speed.
Combos
If you eat an apple within 2 seconds of the previous one, your combo grows. The second quick apple scores x2 and the third and every one after that scores x3, as long as you keep eating within the window. A thin bar under the combo label shows how much time you have left. Combos multiply golden apples too, so a golden apple at x3 is worth 150 points.
Controls
- Keyboard: arrow keys or WASD. Press P to pause.
- Mobile: swipe in the direction you want to go. A simple tap also works: the snake turns toward the side of its head you tapped.
- The game remembers up to two turns in advance, so a quick "up, then left" is executed one after the other on the next two steps. This is how you make tight U-turns at high speed.
- You can never reverse straight back into yourself; that input is ignored.
Snake Game Tips: 10 Habits for a Higher Score
1. Stay away from the walls early
While the snake is short, the walls are the only real danger. Keep your path through the middle of the board and turn toward apples with plenty of room. A wall crash in the first minute is the most common way to waste a run.
2. Turn early, not late
Plan each turn one or two cells before you need it. Because the game buffers up to two inputs, you can press both turns of a U-turn in quick succession and trust the snake to follow. Late, panicked presses are what send the head into the wall.
3. Always leave yourself an exit
Before you dive in for an apple, ask: "After I eat this, where do I go?" If the apple is in a pocket surrounded by your own body, the snake will grow by one segment exactly when it is trapped. Take the long way around, or wait for your tail to move out of the pocket first.
4. Follow your tail when in doubt
Your tail is always moving away. A cell your tail just left is safe to enter on the next step. When the board gets crowded and you are not sure where to go, chasing your own tail in a loop buys time while the apple situation improves.
5. Use the "lawnmower" pattern when long
Once the snake fills a third of the board, wandering freely becomes risky. Switch to sweeping the board in long rows: across, down one, back, down one. This keeps your body in neat parallel lines and leaves the rest of the board as one big open area instead of many small traps.
6. Chain combos only when the path is safe
The x3 combo triples your points, but apples spawn in random free cells, and you only get 2 seconds. Go for the combo when the next apple is a short, safe path away. If reaching it in time means a risky turn near your body, let the combo drop. A dead snake scores nothing.
7. Treat golden apples as a bonus, not a must
A golden apple is worth five normal apples, and more with a combo running. But it also adds three segments at once, which is a lot of extra body to manage late in a run. Grab it when it is close and the route is open. Never cut across your own body or hug a wall to chase one that is about to vanish; its timer ring and blinking warn you when it is almost gone.
8. Save slow-mo for the fast phase
Slow-mo lasts 5 seconds and makes the snake noticeably slower, and the board tints blue while it runs. It is most valuable once the snake is near top speed. Use the slow window to untangle yourself, reach an awkward apple, or line up a combo.
9. Keep the middle open
A common mistake is to coil the body through the centre of the board, which splits the free space into two halves. Try to keep your body along one side or in tidy rows so the open area stays connected.
10. Use a continue wisely
If you are offered a continue after crashing, the snake restarts near an edge facing a long open run, with a short countdown and a brief "ghost" moment in which it cannot crash. Use those first seconds to steer into open space and settle into a safe pattern rather than rushing for the nearest apple.
Common Mistakes
- Chasing every apple by the shortest path. The shortest path often leads into a dead end.
- Pressing keys repeatedly in panic. Only two turns are buffered; extra presses are ignored or cause an unexpected turn.
- Forgetting that the snake keeps growing. A golden apple adds three segments; plan space for them.
- Playing on a tiny screen with swipes that are too short. Make clear, deliberate swipes so each one registers as one turn.
- Ignoring the tail. Most self-crashes happen when the head re-enters an area the tail has not left yet.
FAQ
How are points scored in Neon Snake?
A normal apple is worth 10 points and a golden apple 50, multiplied by your combo (up to x3). Eating apples within 2 seconds of each other builds the combo.
Can the snake go through walls?
No. The board has solid walls, and touching one ends the run. Only the short ghost moment after a continue lets the snake slide along a wall instead of crashing.
Does the snake keep getting faster forever?
No. It speeds up with each apple until it reaches a maximum speed after roughly 30 apples, then stays there.
What is a good score in Snake?
There is no official benchmark, so compare against your own Best score shown at the top right. Once you are reliably eating 30 or more apples with regular combos, your scores will climb quickly.
Why did my turn not register?
You cannot turn directly backwards, and pressing the direction you are already moving does nothing. On mobile, very short swipes may also be too small to count.
