Knowing your multiplication tables by heart makes almost every other part of maths easier: division, fractions, area, percentages and mental maths all depend on them. In many Indian schools, children learn tables up to 10 in the early primary classes and go on to 20 a little later, and many parents remember chanting "do ekam do, do dooni chaar" at school.

This page gives you the multiplication tables from 1 to 20 in compact charts, the tricks that make them easier to remember, and a simple practice plan for kids. At the end you will find how to practise each table in our free Math Master game.

How to Read the Charts

Each chart shows several tables side by side. Find the table you want in the top row, then go down to the row for the number you are multiplying by. For example, in the first chart, the "Table of 6" column and the "ร— 7" row meet at 42, because 6 ร— 7 = 42.

The table of 1 is simple: any number times 1 is the number itself (1, 2, 3 ... 10), so the charts start from 2.

Times Tables Tricks That Make Learning Easier

1. You already know half of every table

Multiplication works both ways: 7 ร— 4 is the same as 4 ร— 7. Once you know the table of 4, you already know the 4 in the table of 7. Every new table you learn is shorter than the last, because you have seen many of its answers before.

2. Easy tables first: 2, 5 and 10

  • Table of 10: add a zero. 10 ร— 7 = 70.
  • Table of 5: half of the table of 10. 5 ร— 8 is half of 80, so 40. Answers always end in 5 or 0.
  • Table of 2: double the number. 2 ร— 9 = 9 + 9 = 18.

3. Doubling tricks for 4 and 8

  • Table of 4: double, then double again. 4 ร— 7: 7 doubled is 14, doubled again is 28.
  • Table of 8: double three times. 8 ร— 6: 12, 24, 48.

4. The table of 9 finger trick

Hold up all ten fingers. To work out 9 ร— 4, fold down your fourth finger from the left. You have 3 fingers to the left of it and 6 to the right: the answer is 36. It works for 9 ร— 1 to 9 ร— 10. Also notice that the digits of every answer in the table of 9 (up to 9 ร— 10) add up to 9: 1 + 8, 2 + 7, 3 + 6 and so on.

5. The table of 11

For 11 ร— 1 to 11 ร— 9, write the digit twice: 11 ร— 6 = 66. And 11 ร— 10 = 110.

6. Tables 12 to 19: split into 10 + the rest

This is the most useful trick for the higher tables. Split the bigger number into 10 and its units, multiply both, and add.

  • 14 ร— 7 = (10 ร— 7) + (4 ร— 7) = 70 + 28 = 98
  • 17 ร— 6 = 60 + 42 = 102
  • 19 ร— 8 = 80 + 72 = 152

This is exactly the method Math Master shows when you get a two-digit multiplication wrong in Mental Maths, so practising it in the game reinforces the habit.

7. Tables of 15 and 20

  • Table of 20: double the number and add a zero. 20 ร— 7: 14, then 140.
  • Table of 15: 10 times the number plus half of that. 15 ร— 6 = 60 + 30 = 90.

8. The table of 19: one less than 20

19 ร— 7 is one 7 less than 20 ร— 7: 140 โˆ’ 7 = 133. The same idea works for 18 (two less than 20) and 9 (one less than 10).

9. Watch for neighbouring answers

The most common mistake is giving the answer for the next or previous row, such as saying 48 for 7 ร— 7 instead of 49. Math Master's wrong options deliberately include these near misses, like 7 ร— 6 or 7 ร— 8, so you learn to tell them apart.

A 4-Week Practice Plan for Kids

Ten to fifteen minutes a day is better than one long session a week. Here is a plan that works well for children in Classes 2 to 5.

WeekFocusDaily routine
1Tables 2, 5, 10, then 3 and 4Say one table aloud, then practise it in Tables Practice until you get 10 in a row.
2Tables 6, 7, 8, 9One new table per day; revise the previous day's table first.
3Tables 11 to 15Use the "10 + the rest" trick, one table per day, plus a Mixed round.
4Tables 16 to 20One table per day, then a Mixed round to keep older tables fresh.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Say, write, play. Saying a table aloud, writing it once and then practising it in a game uses three different kinds of memory.
  • Revise the hard ones. Most children find 6, 7, 8, 12 and 13 hardest. Give them extra time.
  • Use real life. Ask how many wheels on 6 autos, or how much 4 samosas cost at 15 rupees each.
  • Celebrate streaks. Praise accuracy and improvement, not only speed.

How to Practise Tables in Math Master

Math Master on GameChakra has a dedicated Tables Practice mode:

  • Pick any single table from 2 to 20, or choose Mixed.
  • Each question asks a times-table fact from ร— 1 to ร— 10, with four answer choices. You have 10 seconds per question and 3 lives.
  • As you get answers right in a row, questions focus more on the harder ร— 5 to ร— 10 facts. In Mixed, the range of tables also grows from 2โ€“10 up to 20.
  • Every correct answer scores 100 points. Every 5 correct answers in a row raises your combo, up to ร— 3 points.
  • A wrong answer shows the right method, and the end screen lists the questions to practise again.

Younger children can start with the Kids: Class 3โ€“5 mode, which mixes tables of 2 to 10 with addition and subtraction. Older students and adults can try Speed Challenge: 60 seconds to answer as many questions as possible on a number pad.

Common Mistakes

  • Only chanting tables in order. Children who only recite "7 ones are 7, 7 twos are 14..." often have to start from the beginning to find 7 ร— 8. Practise facts out of order too.
  • Rushing to higher tables. Make sure 2 to 10 are solid before moving to 11 to 20; the higher tables depend on them.
  • Skipping revision. Tables are forgotten quickly without regular practice.

FAQ

What is the easiest way to learn tables 1 to 20?

Learn 2, 5 and 10 first, then use the doubling, finger and "10 + the rest" tricks for the others. Practise a little every day, in and out of order.

How long does it take to learn multiplication tables?

It varies by child. With 10 to 15 minutes of daily practice, many children can learn tables up to 10 within a few weeks, and the tricks above make 11 to 20 much quicker.

Which table is the hardest?

Many children find 7, 8, 13 and 17 hardest because they have fewer patterns. Splitting them into smaller parts, like 17 = 10 + 7, helps a lot.

Should my child learn tables up to 20?

Tables up to 10 are essential. Tables up to 20 are taught in many Indian schools and make mental maths much faster.
