Mahjong Solitaire is a calm, single-player tile puzzle that uses the beautiful tiles of the traditional Chinese game of Mahjong. It is not the same as four-player Mahjong, which is a game of collecting sets. In the solitaire version, the tiles are stacked into a layout, and your goal is to remove all of them in matching pairs. It sounds easy, but which pair you choose, and when, decides whether you clear the board or get stuck.

This guide explains the rules of Mahjong Solitaire, the tile set, how the GameChakra version scores your game, and the strategies that help you win more often.

Mahjong Solitaire Rules

The goal

Remove every tile from the board by matching them in pairs. When the last pair is gone, you win.

Which tiles can you pick? (Free tiles)

You may only select a tile that is free. A tile is free when both of these are true:

  1. Nothing is on top of it. Not even partly covering it.
  2. Its left side or its right side is open. At least one of the two long sides has no tile directly touching it on the same layer.

The top and bottom edges do not matter, only left and right. A tile in the middle of a row, with neighbours on both sides, is blocked until one neighbour is removed. On GameChakra, the Glow button highlights all free tiles, which is very helpful while you learn. Tapping a blocked tile just makes it shake.

How tiles match

Two tiles match when they show the same picture. There are two exceptions:

  • Any flower tile matches any other flower tile.
  • Any season tile matches any other season tile.

The Tile Set

A full 144-tile set contains:

GroupTilesCopies
Dots (circles)1 to 94 of each
Bamboo1 to 94 of each
Characters1 to 94 of each
WindsEast, South, West, North4 of each
DragonsRed, Green, White4 of each
Flowers4 different flowers1 of each, all match each other
Seasons4 different seasons1 of each, all match each other

Because most tiles come in sets of four, you will often see three or four copies of the same tile, and choosing which two to match is the heart of the strategy.

How Mahjong Solitaire Works on GameChakra

Layouts

  • Turtle: the classic five-layer pyramid, 144 tiles.
  • Fortress: walls, gates and corner towers, 144 tiles.
  • Butterfly: two wide wings on a tall body, 144 tiles.
  • Small: a compact pyramid of 100 tiles.
  • Easy: 72 big tiles in two layers, designed for phones.

Smaller layouts use fewer copies of each tile, so in the Easy layout most tiles appear only twice. Every deal is generated so that it can be solved, which means a dead end is always the result of the order of moves, never an impossible deal.

Buttons

  • Undo takes back your last pair. You can undo as many times as you like, and it costs no points. Keyboard: Z or Backspace.
  • Hint flashes a matching free pair. Each new hint costs 50 points from your final score. Keyboard: H.
  • Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles. You have 3 per game, each costing 100 points. Keyboard: S.
  • Glow turns the free-tile highlight on or off.

Your game saves automatically, so you can leave and come back to the same board.

Scoring

When you clear the board, your score is 1,000 + a time bonus โˆ’ 50 per hint โˆ’ 100 per shuffle, with a minimum of 100. The time bonus starts high and falls the longer you take; on a 144-tile layout it starts at 1,500 and drops by 1.5 points per second. If you give up instead, you score 10 points for every pair you removed.

Mahjong Tips: How to Clear the Board

1. Open the long rows first

Long horizontal rows can only be eaten from the ends, one tile at a time. They are the slowest part of any layout to clear. Remove tiles from the ends of long rows whenever you have a choice.

2. Free the top layers early

A tile on top of a stack blocks everything under it. Prioritise pairs that uncover new tiles. A match that frees two hidden tiles is better than one that frees nothing.

3. Think before matching when three or four copies are free

If three copies of a tile are free, pick the two that unlock the most tiles, and leave the third where it blocks the least. If all four are free, match both pairs at once; there is no risk.

4. Watch for buried twins

The classic trap: two identical tiles stacked one on top of the other, or sitting in the same row, where one blocks the other. If those are the last two copies, you cannot match them. When you see a copy that is blocked by its own twin, use the other copies to pair with them instead.

5. Don't rush easy pairs

Not every available match is a good one. Removing a pair that unlocks nothing can leave you short of the copies you need later. When in doubt, choose the pair that opens up the board the most.

6. Count copies

If two copies of a tile have already been removed, the remaining two must be matched with each other. Keep an eye on which tiles have been played so you don't strand a pair.

7. Use Undo instead of Shuffle

When you hit "No matching free pairs", step back a few moves with Undo and try a different order. Undo is free; shuffles cost points and are limited to three.

8. Play for score only once you can win

The time bonus rewards speed, but a hint costs 50 points and a shuffle 100. Learn to win cleanly first, then speed up.

Common Mistakes

  • Thinking the top and bottom edges block a tile. Only the left and right sides, plus tiles on top, matter.
  • Matching the first pair you see. Look for the pair that frees the most tiles.
  • Ignoring the middle of long rows. They need many moves to reach, so start early.
  • Using shuffles at the first sign of trouble. Undo usually solves the problem for free.
  • Forgetting the flowers and seasons rule. Any flower matches any flower; any season matches any season.

FAQ

What makes a mahjong tile free?

Nothing on top of it, and an open left or right side. A tile with neighbours on both its left and right is blocked.

Do flower tiles have to match exactly?

No. Any flower matches any flower, and any season matches any season. All other tiles must match exactly.

Is every game of Mahjong Solitaire winnable?

On GameChakra, yes. Every deal is generated to be solvable, so with the right order of moves you can always clear it.

Which layout should beginners choose?

Start with Easy: 72 large tiles in two layers, with most tiles appearing only twice. Move on to Small and then Turtle once you are comfortable.

What happens if there are no moves left?

The game tells you there are no matching free pairs and offers to shuffle, undo or give up.
